The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) reported 90 cases of suspicious betting in its latest report, for the second quarter of 2024. The alerts refer to bets involving eight sports and in 25 different countries, across 5 continents.

The number represents a 3% drop compared to that recorded in the first quarter of the year, but an 80% increase when compared to the same period last year, when 50 alerts were recorded.

84% of alerts were related to just three sports: eSports, football and table tennis.

According to IBIA, eSports accounted for around 50% of the Q2 total ; however, most of these alerts concern a single linked case. Poland was the country with the highest number of suspicious bets recorded, with 6 alerts in the period.

Only one suspected case has been reported in Brazil, relating to a football bet.

Sport Number of suspected cases
eSports 48
Soccer 16
Table tennis 12
Tennis 9
Badminton 2
Handball 1
Fell 1
Boxing 1

Bet monitoring

IBIA monitors $300 billion in annual handle volume across more than 125 sports betting brands globally. The association maintains a policy of transparency and publishes quarterly integrity reports analyzing the activity reported across its network.

For the association’s CEO, Khalid Ali, the increase in alerts compared to last year is due to a specific case in eSports.

“The situation is being closely monitored and heightened vigilance is being advocated as we look to work with stakeholders to investigate. While the increase in alerts may understandably raise eyebrows, it should be noted that eSports has seen a significant reduction in annual alerts across IBIA membership in 2023. This case again highlights the importance and effectiveness of customer account monitoring in detecting suspicious betting and protecting sporting events, consumers and regulated betting markets.”

Focus on Brazil

The report provided data focused on Brazil in light of market regulation. According to IBIA, more than 60% of brands operating in Brazil today are members of the association.

The document also brings the expectation of a betting volume of US$ 34 billion in the domestic market, generating US$ 2.8 billion in taxable revenue by 2028.

In the last 5 years, IBIA reported 45 suspected cases of betting in Brazil, 34 of them in football and 6 in tennis.
