The vote on Bill No. 3,626, which deals with the regulation of sports betting , was scheduled to take place this Wednesday (29) in the plenary of the Federal Senate, but ended up being postponed until next Wednesday (6).

The topic entered the Agenda this Wednesday after an urgency request made by the Economic Affairs Committee (CAE).

The request was approved by the majority of senators present. However, after the vote, Senator Eduardo Girão presented an excerpt from the plenary’s internal rules arguing that the issue did not deserve to be considered urgent.

Despite the postponement of the deliberation on the matter, rapporteur Angelo Coronel read a favorable opinion on the approval of the project.

The vote is expected to take place next week, with the return of the President of the Senate, Senator Rodrigo Pacheco, who is in Saudi Arabia for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 28).

Delay in voting

Senator Eduardo Girão began the discussion on the matter by arguing for postponing the vote on the bill, citing the harm caused by gambling addiction.

“The urgency of this in a project of such gravity is something that seems to me to have major consequences,” he said.

After the vote was postponed, senators in favor of the bill took a stance criticizing the delay.

“ Deep down, there are people who want the Lula government to not have this revenue that is 100% fair.

“It’s not possible, that’s not being against the Lula government, it’s being against Brazil,” said Senator Jorge Kajuru.

“We want to legalize it because betting houses want to become official in Brazil because they know that this is a place with a great future,” highlighted Senator Angelo Coronel during the reading of the report.
